Curated by Ángela Juarranz and Carlos Mombiela, the exhibition explores the transformative role of architecture in the rehabilitation and reactivation of Spain’s built heritage over the last five decades. Bringing together projects of diverse scales, programs, and geographies, Radical Rehab highlights interventions that go beyond preservation, demonstrating how existing structures can be adapted, renewed, and given new life through architectural innovation.
The inclusion of the El Ninot Market model recognizes the project as a significant example of this approach. Awarded first prize in an international competition and completed between 2010 and 2015, the intervention carefully restored the market’s historic steel structure while introducing new underground logistics and service facilities. Rather than altering the building’s iconic volume, the project transformed its enclosure and public interfaces, improving environmental performance, daylight control, accessibility, and the relationship between the market and the surrounding city.
